The Great Depression

The great depresion was a world wide economic down turn. The stock market crash of October 29, 1929 was the start of the worst ecenomic depresion in US history. the day of october 29, 1929 will be forever known as "black Tuesday" the day the world fell in to an economic depresion that lasted untill the start of World War two. The unemployment in the United States rose to as high as 25%. Citys that depended on industry were hit the hardest. The worst part of the depresion was the fact that it coinsided with the drought in the mid west creating the dust bowl. The drought caused the repeated crop failure in the mid west.

Migrant workers

Many men in need of work migrated to California. They went there looking for work from the farms there. Most migrant workers did not have families or if they did they did not travel with them. in the 1930's over 1.3 million Americans from across the country migrated to California looking for work. in 1933 many farm workers were refused to work for the $0.60 that the land owners offered. Most migrant workers came from Oklahoma. Most had lost there farms or farming jobs. Most migrant workers would walk around from town to town looking for jobs and woul many times find that these jobs did not pay well.

John Steinbeck

John Ernst Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. Steinbeck attended Stanford University. He is the author of six non fiction book and five short stories. He recived the Nobel prize for literature. He served as a correspondent in World War two. In 1948 he returned home to be with a friend whos car was hit by a train injuring him he died just hours before Stinebeck got there. This sent him into a deep depresion for several years. Stinbeck died of heart disese on December 20, 1968.

Salinas valley

The Salinas valley runs along the Salinas river. The Salinas valley was home to the Ohone nativer americans. It is famous for its vineyards. Most spinach lettuse and strawberries are major crops. It is called the "salad bowl of the world." The valley gets its water from an under ground runoff from the mountains. The river is a sand river water only runs through ot if it rains realy hard.
